How to Read a Clash of Clans Base Before Attacking

Reading a base means understanding how your army will move before the attack begins. The same army can triple one layout and fail on another if pathing, traps, and defensive zones are ignored.

A good read starts with the win condition, then works backward through entry, funnel, spell timing, and cleanup.

Identify the core threat

Look first for the defenses that can end the attack: Town Hall effects, Inferno Towers, Scattershots, Monolith, Eagle Artillery, Spell Towers, Air Defenses, or multi-target splash depending on the army. Your plan should explain when those threats fall.

Trace the path

  • Choose where the army enters.
  • Remove outside buildings that could pull troops away.
  • Predict the first compartment split.
  • Mark where spells protect the army.
  • Leave a cleanup path for back-end buildings.

Check for hidden risk

You cannot know every trap, but base shape gives clues. Empty spaces, defensive islands, suspicious gaps, and isolated high-value defenses often signal traps or pathing bait.

FAQ

What is the first thing to check on a base?

Check the win condition: the Town Hall, core defenses, and the section your army must control to earn stars.

Why do troops walk around the base?

They often follow the closest available building. Weak funneling or open side buildings can pull them away from the intended core path.
